It’s been more than three years since Big John was severely damaged due to Hurricane Ian. Then he stood in place as Little John for quite some time as the storm forced his upper body to fall onto his lower half and pedestal. What looked like an easy fix turned out to be more complicated as it was revealed that the damage was much more extensive.
The statue’s internal steel structure is being rebuilt with modern materials to increase its ability to withstand higher winds. The steel base where Big John is attached by bolts to the cement pedestal had to be totally reconstructed. Water leakage and steel corrosion over the years made it impossible to re-attach in its current condition. Now that work is complete, and all that remains is the final fiberglass repairs and painting. Repairs are currently being done at Brand 1 Ink in the Cape Coral Industrial Park. Owner Clinton Strand said that he hopes to have him ready by the end of November or early December.
A celebration ceremony will be announced soon for his eager return to the place where he has stood since 1969. Elmer Tabor, who owns the plaza and Big John, will be one hand to celebrate the return of one of Cape Coral’s most iconic residents.
